History of the Letter Sweater

by The Cricket on October 25, 2014

Princeton Football TeamThe Harvard and Princeton football teams have their 107th meeting this week at Princeton. It’s sure to be a cold tailgate, so throw a letter sweater over a button-down, jeans, a puffer vest and your Harvard or Princeton JP Crickets.

RossHarvFBPlayerPostDid you know that the letter sweater was created by the Harvard baseball team in 1865? By the time Harvard and Princeton met for the first time in 1877, it was the practice for the team captain to allow certain players who played in the most important games (like Princeton) to keep the ‘H’ jerseys as an award. If a player did not play in an important game, the jersey had to be returned at the end of the season. Awarding the ‘H’ jersey may have been the birth of the varsity letter as an award.

JP Crickets are the modern version of the letter sweater. In luxe velvet or leather, with gorgeously embroidered team or university logos; our slippers and loafers will reward you, whether you’re at the tailgate or the farmers’ market.Princeton Men's LoaferLattes & Loafers
